SegaSonic the Hedgehog, known by various names including Sonic Arcade, Sonic the Arcade and SEGASONIC Arcade was officially released into the Japanese arcades in June 1993. Versions of the arcade game appeared in limited quantities in arcades in anglophone countries, such as London’s Sega World.

The game was Sonic the Hedgehog’s first major arcade outing, and featured Sega’s mascot alongside two new characters: Ray The Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo. Mighty is one of the oldest characters in the Sonic franchise; he was a prototype for Sonic and thus bears an uncanny resemblance to him. Mighty would later feature in the low-profile Knuckles’ Chaotix for the Sega 32X; Ray has not appeared in any other official games, but appeared in some Archie comics. All three characters have identical controls and abilities.

Sonic Rush is a video game developed by Sonic Team and Dimps exclusively for the Nintendo DS as part of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog series and released on November 15, 2005. It is a 2D platform game, similar to earlier games in the series as well as later ones like Sonic Advance. Levels in the game are side-scrolling and displayed using both of the DS’s screens. However, boss battles, the main characters’ sprites, and a special stage are rendered in 3D, creating a 2.5D effect.

Sonic Rush’s storyline follows the intertwining adventures of a new character, Blaze the Cat, and the series’ main character, Sonic the Hedgehog. Blaze battles Doctor Eggman, the series’ main antagonist, to recollect the Sol Emeralds which he stole from her world, and Sonic battles Eggman Nega, Eggman’s mysterious lookalike, collecting the Chaos Emeralds—colored jewels that are a central theme to the series—along the way.

The game received mostly positive reviews from critics upon its release, with praise stemming from the game’s music and similarity to older games in the series and criticism stemming from its overall quickness. It sold 2.87 million copies worldwide. A sequel, Sonic Rush Adventure, was later developed and released in 2007.

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (15th September 2009) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that Valkyria Chronicles™ II, is coming exclusively to the PLAYSTATION® portable. PSP owners will be able to experience the highly acclaimed mix of distinctive visuals and addictive gameplay first seen in Valkyria Chronicles™, one of the most highly reviewed tactical RPGs ever to appear on the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system.

The story of Valkyria Chronicles II takes place two years after the conclusion of the original game. A group of young Gallian Military Academy cadets find themselves plunged into a bitter civil war when the newly formed Gallian Revolutionary Army stages a coup. As the epic drama unfolds in the game, players will experience stories of friendship, love and growing pains during a time of war and revolution.

“Valkyria Chronicles received widespread critical acclaim when it launched on PS3 last year,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe Ltd. “It has quickly become one of our most respected franchises, so we’re delighted to be able to continue the saga on the PSP. We hope that fans of the series will enjoy the freedom of experiencing Valkyria wherever they are and that a new audience will be able to discover the universe on their PSPs.”

The “CANVAS” engine, originally developed internally by SEGA Game Studios Japan for Valkyria Chronicles™ on the PLAYSTATION 3, is being fully redesigned for the graphical capabilities of the PSP. This incredibly distinctive engine will power over 20 new distinct and visually stunning environments within which players will have hundreds of different missions to explore.

Valkyria Chronicles’ “BLiTZ” battle system has also been re-designed to offer players the freedom to strategically move around the environment and attack enemies using real-time controls, something never before seen in the tactical role-playing game genre.

Valkyria Chronicles™ II will be available for the PLAYSTATION® Portable in summer 2010.

Amy Rose was created by Kazuyuki Hoshino and based on one of Kenji Terada’s characters. She was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa for Sonic Adventure. She is a pink, female, anthropomorphic hedgehog who plays the part of Sonic’s self-appointed girlfriend. She has chased Sonic since her debut in 1993, and has been trying to win his heart in everything from the series’ games to animated TV shows and comics. She was the first female character introduced into the Sonic The Hedgehog game universe and is also one of the series most popular characters, coming in fifth place in an official popularity poll.

Like Sonic and other characters in the series, Amy is significantly shorter and lighter than humans her same age. To be precise, she is 12 years old, 90 cm (2ft 11in) tall, and her weight is a secret. She was originally described as being 8 years old in Sonic CD, but as of Sonic Adventure and onwards, she has grown older. Also, with the addition of Cream the Rabbit, Amy seems to have found herself a sidekick similar to Sonic’s sidekick, Tails.

The first game in the franchise was released on June 23, 1991, in order to provide Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo’s flagship character Mario (see 1991 in video gaming).[3][4] Since then, Sonic has become one of the world’s best-known video game characters, with his series having sold 50 million copies. In 2005, Sonic was one of the first game character inductees into the Walk of Game, alongside Mario and Link.

Artist Naoto Ōshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka are generally credited with the creation of the character, a blue 15-year-old anthropomorphic hedgehog, who has the ability to run faster than the speed of sound and the ability to curl up into a ball, primarily to attack enemies. This is a major part of the gameplay of the series. Sega has lately announced “Project Needlemouse” which they hope will bring Sonic back to his 2D roots.
